Little kids rock: Music pilot ‘Modern Band’ launches in FWCS | Schools

From chanting “Sweetwater” to holding signs expressing thanks, St. Joseph Central Elementary School students exuded excitement today as visitors arrived for an announcement about a new music pilot program launching in Fort Wayne Community Schools.

Modern Band is a school music program offered by the nationwide nonprofit Little Kids Rock, which is dedicated to transforming lives by expanding and innovating music education in schools.

“Today, we’re bringing it to Fort Wayne,” Sweetwater founder and president Chuck Surack said in music teacher Laura McCoy’s classroom.

Sweetwater is a national sponsor for Little Kids Rock.

David Wish, founder and CEO of Little Kids Rock, said Modern Band fills a gap in traditional music programs — orchestra, chorus, marching band and jazz band — by teaching the modern music of today.

“It’s part of what makes a music program complete,” he said.
